Back in November of 2021 we met with Aylesford School and Aylesford Parish Council for a Southeastern station adoption safety briefing, full of enthusiasm to explore how we could work together to introduce artwork, history and planting to the station.
A slow start was expected due to Covid restrictions. Tom Shelley crafted some details of the station’s history which went on display in an existing cabinet. Students from Aylesford School produced information about the history of the village. Aylesford Parish Council joined Community Rail Network and secured funding for new cabinets.
With the new cabinets ready to go we ran into an unexpected and seemingly intractible tangle of red-tape to get them placed on the walls, that proved reluctant to unravel.
Unravel it we did, inviting students and tutors to join representatives from the Parish Council to launch the community history boards. Katie James, Deputy Headteacher cut the ribbon to declare the launch of the Aylesford station adoption.
The initial enthusiasm has not dampened, the keys have now been handed over to Aylesford School to update the boards with termly projects involving students and the wider community.
